Hong Kong Skyline
Hong Kong has one of the most memorable and recognized skylines in the world. The dense collection of skyscrapers, both on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, combined with the mountains and the surrounding harbour, make this city stand out.
In the harbour, traditional Chinese ships with red sails and the historic Star Ferry contrast starkly against modern skyscrapers’ backdrop. At night, the horizon changes entirely as the sky darkens, and city lights fill the scene.
Two of the best places in Hong Kong to view the skyline are at the top of Victoria Peak or on the Kowloon promenade not far from the Star Ferry pier, where benches line on the shore.
Star Ferry
While this may not be the most expeditious way to cross Victoria Harbor, the famous Star Ferry wins the most scenic award. The Star Ferry has been operating the 10 minutes crossing since 1880 and offers incredible views of the famous skyline. To make it more special, take a ferry to Central at dusk or at 8 p.m. to see a symphony of Lights, a light and sound show.
A Walled Village
Hong Kong has a history. The territory’s past may seem to date back to the days of opium canning, warships, and Britain, but some villages in Hong Kong are over 500 years old. Much of its heritage remains intact. You will find defensive walls, ancient halls, and traditionally dressed villagers.
Victoria Peak
The views from Victoria Peak are legendary for a good reason. You can take a taxi or a bus to the top of the mountain, but the peak tram is a lot more fun. Quickly purchase a combo package to skip the ubiquitous queue, and you’ll be enjoying stunning views in no time. The Morning Trail offers a beautiful, albeit tiring, hike for the more adventurous to the peak.
Lamma Island
A few days in the crowds on Hong Kong Island can make you feel like you need to lie down in a dark room. Do your best, and go to Lamma Island. This rural retreat offers jungle lush, deserted beaches, and ramshackle villages teeming with seafood restaurants. There are no cars on the island, so make sure you have a good pair of legs if you want to explore.
Ngong Ping cable car
With a height of 112 feet and a length of 5.7 km, the Ngong Ping Cable Car offers an aerial view of Lantau’s lush peaks and the luminous South China Sea. The landscape is impressive, even better if you get into one of the glass bottom gondolas. Make your way to the 33-meter Giant Tian Tan Buddha, one of the tallest of its kind in the world.
Temples
Temples continue to play a vital role in Hong Kong’s life, and at major festivals, you’ll see them crowded with locals bringing gifts to thank the gods. Loud, colourful, and chaotic, the temples are often swallowed up by the smoke of incense sticks, which are frequently and boldly burning and beautifully decorated with traditional Chinese patterns and designs.
